Louden Hill, Stannon and King Arthur Downs Stone Circles
This walk heads briefly towards Rough Tor but soon heads south along the west banks of the Tor. The walk then takes a ninety degree right turn to Louden Hill where you discover the major rocking stone. Slightly further west is the Stannon Stone Circle, which on May Day has a significant rising sun alignment. The rising sun shining through a cleft on the summit of Rough Tor and the beam of the rising sun shines down on the circle itself. From here we head directly towards Garrow Tor which will soon bring you to your destination of King Arthur Downs Stone Circle - this is set on the open Downs and can only have been built her to create the alignments shown in the History Content write-up. For those would a good map and compass, plus navigation skills, the walk will detail an extended walk out on the open flat Moorland to King Arthur’s Hall. Well worth the trudge there and back, but emphasising again that this is open Moorland and should definitely not be attempted if there is a risk of low cloud or poor visibility. Whether you stop your walk at the King Arthur Stone Circle or King Arthur’s Hall, you should return the way you came. The lower areas, across to Fernacre Stone Circle, for example, would involve crossing boggy ground and is not recommended.
